The terms for using One-Line Journal, including your content, account, privacy choices and legal rights.

On this page 18 sections

1. About these terms

One-Line Journal is operated by Umuuwa LLC, doing business as Umuuwa, a Wyoming company. These terms cover our journaling app, public website and related services that link to them. References to “we,” “us” and “our” mean Umuuwa LLC.

When you expressly accept these terms, they form an agreement between you and Umuuwa LLC. If you do not agree, do not continue using the journal. You can contact support for a copy of your information or help with deletion without accepting updated terms. A parent or guardian accepting for an eligible minor is responsible for reviewing these terms with them.

Section 15 describes individual arbitration and limits on class proceedings. Section 14 describes limitations of liability. These provisions are subject to the consumer rights and other protections that cannot lawfully be waived where you live.

2. Eligibility and accounts

You must be at least 13 years old, or at least 16 if you are in the European Union. If you are a minor where you live, you also need your parent or guardian’s permission and supervision. We do not offer parental authorization for children below these minimum ages.

Provide accurate account information and keep it current. Protect your sign-in credentials and tell support if you believe someone has accessed your account without permission. Do not impersonate another person or use an account you are not authorized to access.

Clerk provides account registration and authentication, including Apple and Google sign-in. Those providers also have their own terms. Social sign-in does not import your social posts, friends lists or device contacts into your journal.

3. What the service provides

One-Line Journal helps you record private reflections using prompts, edit entries, review your history and progress, participate in weekly leagues, and receive optional reminders, recaps and app updates.

The app is currently free. We do not currently offer purchases, paid subscriptions, recurring charges or paid trials. If paid features are introduced, their prices and payment terms will be presented before a purchase. These terms do not authorize future charges.

One-Line Journal supports personal reflection. It does not provide medical advice, diagnosis, treatment, therapy or emergency services. Prompts about health or emotions are writing prompts, not professional advice. The service is not a monitored crisis or emergency channel.

4. Your journal and profile images

You keep ownership of your journal entries. You give us permission to store, process and display them to you, and calculate progress and league statistics, as necessary to provide the service. Your writing is not published to other users. We do not use journal text for advertising, marketing or AI training.

This operational permission ends when the content or account is deleted, subject to the deletion process and retained records explained in our Privacy Policy. It does not give us ownership of your writing or permission to publish it.

You retain any rights you or your licensors hold in profile images. Only upload images you have permission to use. You authorize us and the account service provider to store, resize and display your chosen image to operate your account. The app does not accept photo, video or audio attachments to journal entries.

Privacy from other journal users does not mean end-to-end encryption. Our Privacy Policy explains cloud storage, necessary administrative access and the providers involved.

5. Weekly leagues and visible activity

After onboarding, your account participates in weekly leagues. Participants in your cohort can see your public leaderboard name, league tier, rank, points, active days, longest weekly run and a capped character total. They cannot see your journal text, private account name or email address.

You can change your public leaderboard name in Settings. The current app has no league participation opt-out. Choose a leaderboard name you are comfortable showing to other participants.

6. Saving, drafts, and exporting your journal

An internet connection is required to save entries to your account. Unsaved drafts may remain on the device where you write them and are not synchronized to other devices. Signing out does not automatically remove drafts.

The current released app does not yet include the new Export journal control. Contact support@one-line-journal.com for a copy of your information or assistance with your current app version. An upcoming update is being prepared with self-service text and JSON export; once released, that feature is designed to work without a support request.

The prepared export includes saved entries and drafts on the exporting device and saves through the system folder picker. It excludes other-device drafts and entries added after export starts; concurrent edits or deletions can affect the result. A synced folder can provide computer access. The feature does not encrypt export files or import them. The marketing website does not provide account sign-in or journal downloads. Keep any copies secure; account deletion does not erase copies you retain.

Drafts are not a backup. They may be lost if local storage is removed. Account deletion attempts to clear drafts on the device used for deletion, but cannot remotely erase drafts on your other devices. Keep your own copies of writing that is important to you; we do not promise uninterrupted storage or a particular backup or recovery service.

7. Optional notifications

If you enable notifications, the app can send journaling reminders, weekly recaps and app updates according to your preferences. Once-daily reminders use your selected time and timezone; the more-nudges option uses app-defined time slots.

You can change preferences in the app or disable permission in device settings. Delivery depends on your device, operating system, connectivity and delivery providers, so notification timing and receipt are not guaranteed.

8. Using the service responsibly

Use the service lawfully and respect other people’s rights. The following restrictions concern misuse of the service; they do not make private reflections into public posts.

  • Do not access another person’s account or data without authorization, defeat access controls, or collect other users’ personal information without permission.
  • Do not introduce malicious software, disrupt the service, manipulate league activity through automated abuse, or use the service to send spam.
  • Do not upload unlawful material, infringe intellectual property rights, impersonate others, or use public profile information to threaten or harass someone.
  • Do not copy, redistribute or reverse engineer our proprietary software except where applicable law or an applicable open-source license permits it.

9. Our software and your suggestions

We and our licensors retain rights in the app, website, branding and other service materials, apart from your content. We grant you a personal, limited, nonexclusive, nontransferable license to use the service for its intended purposes while these terms apply. Open-source components remain subject to their own licenses.

If you voluntarily provide nonconfidential product suggestions, we may use them to improve the service without payment or attribution. This does not transfer ownership of your journal or authorize publication of private support messages. Personal information in feedback is handled under our Privacy Policy.

10. Privacy and other providers

Our Privacy Policy explains information collection, use, sharing, retention and your choices. The provider page describes services that help operate the app and website. Accepting these terms is not, by itself, consent to every form of data processing or an international transfer.

The current released app has a general legal-agreement screen, not the separate journal-storage consent being prepared for an upcoming update. The prepared design asks separately for Terms acceptance and explicit consent to store and process sensitive information you choose to write, including existing entries, to save, retrieve and display your journal. Both choices would be required to continue, with export, account deletion and sign-out available without agreeing and no entry-by-entry classification. This update has not been released or activated. Publishing these terms does not activate it, establish new consent, or mean that a particular legal condition has been satisfied. The Privacy Policy explains current request methods and deletion limits.

Links to other websites and use of third-party account or device services may involve separate terms and privacy notices. We do not control those services or guarantee their availability.

11. Leaving and deleting your account

You can stop using the service at any time. You can delete individual entries or entries for a date and request account deletion in Settings. Removing the app or signing out does not itself delete your account. If you want a copy before deletion and your app does not provide export, contact support first. Contact support if you cannot access your account or need help before agreeing to updated terms.

Journal access is disabled when account deletion begins. Removal of authentication, journal and associated application records may take time while server work completes or retries. Limited identity deletion markers and operational records remain as described in the Privacy Policy. Account deletion attempts to clear this device’s drafts; other-device drafts and copies you retain must be removed separately. Provider backups follow their own retention processes. The prepared update also deletes its new account-linked versioned policy receipts through account deletion; that receipt system is not currently active.

12. Service changes and account restrictions

Features may change, and maintenance, faults or circumstances outside our control may interrupt the service. We may restrict access or suspend or close an account for breaches of these terms, security risks or legal requirements. Where reasonably possible and appropriate, we will explain the restriction and provide an opportunity to contact support.

We may need to act without advance notice to address abuse, protect users or comply with law. Any restriction remains subject to mandatory legal rights. Account closure does not change the data-handling commitments in our Privacy Policy.

13. Availability and warranties

To the extent permitted by law, the service is provided as available, without additional warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose or noninfringement. We do not guarantee that it will always be available, error-free or suitable for every individual purpose. These statements do not exclude statutory warranties, required security obligations or remedies that cannot lawfully be excluded.

14. Liability and third-party claims

To the extent permitted by law, we and our directors, employees and agents are not liable for indirect, consequential, incidental, special, exemplary or punitive losses arising from the service, including lost profits, revenue or data.

Subject to mandatory legal rights, our total liability for a claim arising from the service is limited to the lesser of the amount you paid us during the six months before the claim arose or US $10. Because the service is currently free, this formula can result in a zero-dollar limit. It does not apply where the law prohibits that limitation.

To the extent permitted by law, you are responsible for third-party claims and reasonable resulting costs caused by your unlawful use of the service, infringement of another person’s rights or breach of these terms. We will give reasonable notice of a claim for which we seek reimbursement and cooperate in its resolution. This does not require you to cover losses caused by our own unlawful conduct.

15. Governing law and resolving disputes

Wyoming law governs these terms, subject to mandatory protections that apply where you live. Before starting arbitration, either party must give the other written notice of the dispute and allow at least 30 days for informal resolution. Send your notice to the support email or mailing address below.

If the dispute remains unresolved, you and we agree to individual binding arbitration administered by the American Arbitration Association under its applicable Consumer Arbitration Rules. Arbitration ordinarily replaces a court trial before a judge or jury. The rules govern fees, procedure and available consumer protections. Either party may use small-claims court where the applicable rules permit.

Arbitration will take place in Wyoming unless applicable law or the AAA rules require another location or permit another format. Remote or document-based proceedings may be available under those rules. The arbitrator must apply applicable law and provide a written decision.

To the extent permitted by law, arbitration is limited to the individual parties’ dispute: claims may not be combined with other proceedings or brought as class or representative proceedings. This restriction does not remove rights or remedies that cannot lawfully be waived.

The informal-negotiation and arbitration requirements do not apply to disputes concerning intellectual property rights, allegations of theft, piracy, invasion of privacy or unauthorized use, or requests for injunctive relief. Courts may also address enforcement or review of arbitration as allowed by law.

For disputes properly heard in court, the state or federal courts in Wyoming are the agreed forum, except where mandatory law gives you a different forum. If an arbitration provision cannot lawfully be enforced, the affected dispute may be heard by a court with jurisdiction. Mandatory consumer protections and applicable AAA consumer safeguards take priority over conflicting wording in this section.

16. Apple and Google distribution

If you obtain the app through Apple or Google, follow the relevant store’s usage rules and applicable third-party terms. This agreement is with Umuuwa LLC. We are responsible for our app and support; the distributor has no obligation to provide maintenance or support.

Any applicable store warranty or refund rights remain governed by law and the distributor’s rules. We, rather than the distributor, are responsible for addressing claims about our app to the extent required by law. Apple and Google may enforce the applicable app-license provisions as third-party beneficiaries.

You must comply with applicable export restrictions and may not use the app where prohibited by US sanctions or if you are on an applicable US restricted-party list.

17. Updates and mandatory rights

We may revise these terms as the service or legal requirements change. We will identify the updated date and provide notice of material changes through an appropriate channel, such as the app, website or email. Where agreement is required, we will request it. Merely posting revised terms does not supply consent required for a new use of personal information.

Nothing here removes consumer, privacy or other rights that cannot lawfully be waived. This applies to warranties, liability, reimbursement, account restrictions, arbitration and court venue. If a provision is unenforceable, the remaining provisions continue to apply where legally possible. Failure to enforce a provision on one occasion does not waive it for every future occasion.
